Dan Maina Success Story

Dan Maina is a 10-year-old boy and the 4th born son to Monica Wanjiru, a former street mother and also a beneficiary of Daraja mentorship and empowering programs. He was born deaf, and this hit her mother differently. So, for the next 6 years, the mother lived in denial before coming to terms with the condition of her son.

Dan was enrolled in Early Childhood Education (ECDE) at Jitegemea schools but he could not benefit from the regular education setting. So he had to be transferred to Koinange Integrated school of the deaf for 2 years and did not fully benefit.

This delayed his progress in education and was later taken to Ngala special school for the deaf in Nakuru where he was retained in the same grade because he had not fully developed his sign language, a key component in his studies. Dan is supposed to be in grade four at his age but he is in grade one.

He is talented in football and loves to draw and dance. His relationship with peers in school is encouraging and he even teaches his siblings the signs language at home and they are becoming conversant. This fosters good relationships and enhances communication in the family.

Ensuring every aspect of Dan’s life is taken care of, a project manager from Daraja 360 is tasked to follow up on his academic progress and well-being. Certainly, Dan is on the path of reaching his full potential and becoming an inspiration to many with a similar condition.
