Many people especially youths, are not living their childhood dreams. They dreamt of being one thing, trained in another, and are practicing something different today. This confused progression in our generation can be attributed to a lack of guidance, mentorship, and generally a narrow worldview. Parents too have hard time trying to monitor their children once they’re out of school. Choosing a suitable summer camp has also been an issue.
After thorough research, Daraja 360 noticed that most young adults lack the right transitional bridge to either pursuing their dreams or job placements. Most of them are still struggling with identity crises, mental health issues, drugs and substance abuse, and relationships.
The camp offer a good platform for form four leavers to improve soft skills rather than just the technical skills, and to instill discipline through structure. The participants are also able to build unique interest in their area of preference through mentor talks.
The Daraja 360, a community based organization developed a mentorship curriculum intending to address the the most common issues affecting young people. One of the strategies was through camps held immediately after they break for their summer holiday. With the theme “What’s Next After Form Four“, the 2020 Daraja summer camp was a after an impressive turnout of former high school students – who got to learn a lot from professional mentors.
The Objectives of the Camp was to:
Create awareness on available opportunities after high school
Help the youth find their career direction
Help the youth discover their identity
Addressing emerging issues such as mental health, drugs, and substance abuse and relationships.
Introducing youths to both HELB & TVET opportunities
The venue for the camp was well considered in regards to the COVID-19 protocols. It offered a lush green and serene landscape for participants to enjoy outdoor environment while engaging in outdoor activities.
