How KUCCPS is Expanding Youth Access to Technical and Vocational Education in Kenya

The future growth of a country depends on its youthful and vibrant population. Great economies understand that and influence their future growth by tapping into the innovative and creative employment prospects of young people. However, the rate of youth unemployment has been increasing globally. This is associated with a number of factors, though the staggering increase number of young people around the world contributes a lot to this problem.

But what is of particular concern, especially in developing countries, is the dramatic increase of low-skilled and low income youth in labor markets. Some of these countries have a very youthful population who are three times more likely to be unemployed than adults. Unfortunately, most of them end up with poor quality and low-paid jobs with unstable work arrangements, poor working conditions, limited training and development opportunities.

Youth Access to Technical Vocational Education

There is immense untapped potential in young people that would benefit not just them but also society. And that’s why more Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) are needed to expand youth access to training opportunities. improving the quality of training, and better job placement with current labor market demands.

Most of the young adults find themselves stuck on matters career choices and pursuant of the same especially those who fell short of the university cutout score of C+ and above.

For one to benefit from the government fees subsidy, the application for placement to TVET institution has to be done through Kenya University and college central placement services (KUCCPS). It is a government agency whose mandate is to coordinate the placement of government-sponsored students to universities and colleges.

KUCCPS offers opportunity for youths with mean grade of C- and below to join the national polytechnics and other technical and vocational training institutes.

The Youth with a mean grade of :

C- qualifies for a three years Diploma course

D+ qualifies for Three-year certificate courses

and those with an E also are qualified for artisan courses.

The courses are fully funded by the government.

However, we noticed that many people are not aware of this available opportunity. Perhaps it’s an issue of inadequate mass sensitization or advertisements. Or, people are just ignorant. The KUCCPS online application is open twice a year.
