17 years old Sarah is the last born in a family of five children. For the better part of her life, She has been raised by her 80 years old grandmother since her mother is a struggling alcoholic who hasn’t been able to hold down a job and take care of her children.
Her older siblings unfortunately, have fallen into the same trap and can’t be relied on for support. Her grandmother, who plays the role of her guardian is unemployed and has struggled over the years to put food on the table and a roof over their heads.
Additionally, she is also charged with the responsibility of caring for other 5 grandchildren; some orphaned and one of whom suffers from disability. In spite of the myriad difficulties, she constantly has to grapple with, Sarah has proven to be determined to chart a different path and strongly holds that education will open doors to better future.
Due to the hurdles at home, Sarah has taken longer to get through primary school but eventually she performed well and got 314 marks in her final exams her teachers at Nakuru workers primary school, attest that she is hardworking, disciplined and self-driven.
At home her grandmother says that Sarah enjoys reading and is self-motivated. She also believes that Sarah’s future looks promising seeing that she managed to pull through primary school with little assistance.
Sarah’s dream is to become a teacher. She scored 314 marks that helped secure a place at a county school, Bavuni high school. The dream of ever joining school was farfetched. At this point of helplessness, Daraja 360 come through for her. She is now fully sponsored and pursuing her dreams.
