“Building Back Better: towards a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World”. This was the theme for the International day for people with disabilities 2020.
According to the Kenyan constitution’s CHAPTER 4 – THE BILL OF RIGHTS · 39—Freedom of movement and residence, every citizen has the right to freedom of movement. Most people living with disabilities do not get to enjoy this freedom because they lack the necessary mobility devices and that limits their movement.
This makes it even hard for them get access to basic services like easy of shopping, enjoying the outdoors, socializing and basically the freedom to roam around like other people. Moreover, our public spaces are designed with little regard to the accessibility of people with disabilities.
As Daraja 360 we are focused on helping the beneficiaries of our program to get access to their rights. We try to empower people with disability to enjoy this right and freedom through soliciting for the required mobility devices from various institutions.
On a beautiful Thursday of the 15th of July 2021, PWD Shabaab group hosted an empowerment program at Shabab Open grounds. Caregivers, parents and people living with disability were hosted. Daraja 360 was also invited to participate in the event and we are so grateful for the invitation. In attendance was also by representatives from the National Council For People Living with Disabilities.
The council shared their strategic plan for the remaining part of the year as well as the opportunity and services that the governments are offers to PWD community. Rani of the Lion’s club Nakuru was the chief guest. She donated 5 specialised wheelchairs, 3 simple children wheelchairs and a few pairs of crutches.
Daraja 360 was privileged to get 2 specialized wheelchairs for Patience Wanjiru and Nijel Yusuf who are our beneficiaries. The event was also graced by the presence of Kisii County police commander- Sgt. Stephen Koori.
As a community based organization, Daraja champions for equal rights for people with disabilities. We envision a future where our public places and surroundings will be more accessible to this special group. Homes also designed in consideration to their comfort. We can achieve all these if people become more understanding and never get tired of showing empathy towards people with disabilities.
