Celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child

Theme: MY VOICE, OUR EQUAL FUTURE!!

A society where everyone has a voice and is heard is the ideal we are striving toward, in most communities around Kenya, girls have been deprived of this rights which has lead to issues such as early marriages, GBV s, limited openings to education opportunities limiting girls’ opportunities for success in life.

Thanks to the UN General Assembly who declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child. Since then, girls all over the world have been participating to show their power.

The day does not only exist to celebrate everything good about being young and female but was created to serve a higher purpose. What is this purpose then? The day exists to recognize girls’ power and their potential around the world. The day also brings to light the unique challenges girls face and drives efforts that meet these needs and fulfill their rights- not benevolently for them but in partnership with them.

To mark the day-11th October 2020, Daraja 360 girls participated in the 25th celebration at Hyrax Hill which was organized by the Children Network Association. The theme being “ My Voice our equal future.” It was a blissful day for the girls for they were able to appreciate their importance in society and learn about the opportunities available for them.

Achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment is only probable by ensuring the rights of women and girls will get to justice and inclusion.
